A feminist rewriting of BLUEBEARD, part of a series written by various authors in which you won’t find passive beauties, macho princes, unconsenting kisses or witchy old women. A FAIRY TALE REVOLUTION is here to remix and revive our favourite stories.
Four retailing by Malorie Blackman (BLUEBEARD), Kamila Shamsie (THE UGLY DUCKLING), Jeanette Winterson (HANSEL AND GRETEL) and Rebecca Solnit (CINDERELLA). Each tale features an afterword from its star author, exploring how they approached their retelling.
Malorie Blackman has written over seventy books for children and young adults, including the NOUGHTS & CROSSES series, THIEF and a science-fiction thriller, CHASING THE STARS. A major BBC production adapted NOUGHTS & CROSSES, with Roc Nation (Jay-Z’s entertainment company) curating the soundtrack as executive music producer. In 2008 Malorie received an OBE for her services to children’s literature, and between 2013 and 2015 she was the Children’s Laureate.
Kamila Shamsie grew up in Karachi and now lives in London. She is the author of six novels including HOME FIRE which was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2017, shortlisted for the Costa Best Novel Award, the Books Are My Bag Readers Awards 2018, and the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature, and won the London Hellenic Prize and the Women's Prize for Fiction 2018. Three of her novels have received awards from Pakistan's Academy of Letters. Kamila Shamsie is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was named a Granta Best of Young British Novelists in 2013; she was also awarded a South Bank Arts Award in 2018.
After graduating from Oxford University, Jeanette Winterson CBE, worked for a while in the theatre and published her first novel, ORANGES ARE NOT THE ONLY FRUIT, at 25, then scripted it into a BAFTA-winning BBC drama. She has written 10 novels for adults, as well as children's books, non-fiction and screenplays. She is Professor of New Writing at the University of Manchester.
Laura Barrett is an illustrator inspired by the darker side of folk and fairy tales, and enjoys working in the medium of traditional Scherenschnitte (paper cutting). Since graduating from University of the Arts London and with over 10 years of industry experience, she has worked with a stellar client list including the BBC and The Guardian.

In Book #1, Malorie Blackman retells 'Bluebeard'.
'Please don't even try to get down to the basement. Just leave it alone - okay? Otherwise you'll ruin things for both of us...'
Nia has met the man she wants to marry. Marcus is kind, clever and handsome, with a beard so dark it is nearly blue-black. Nia demands a single promise from him - that Marcus will never enter her study in the basement, her private space.
But when Marcus's curiosity begins to mount Nia feels more and more uneasy. Will he betray her? Can he accept that no means no? Can a woman ever have a room of her own?
