A choirboy's suicide and his choirmaster's subsequent murder wreaks havoc in provincial Dorset in 1840 and the effects of the crime have consequences that span many years. The tragedy affects many local families, in particular the choirmaster's half-brother who is burdened for years to come.
This is an ambitious period drama that is written well and builds a strong picture of the setting with many different families living in a rural village. There is plenty of action both pertaining to the central mystery and the tangential personal stories, giving the novel a good foundation for adaptation.
Described as "combining the suspense of a thriller and a daring playfulness with literary form" and pitched "for fans of Adam Thorpe’s ULVERTON (many voices, over time), Sarah Perry’s THE ESSEX SERPENT and Benjamin Myers's THE GALLOWS POLE (a non-conventional view of an era), Francis Spufford’s GOLDEN HILL (brilliant use of language and form). "
Think "Broadchurch" meets Cranford.
Andy Charman was born in Dorset and grew up near Wimborne Minster, where CROW COURT is set. He has had short stories published in anthologies and journals.
In the spring of 1840, in the Dorset market town of Wimborne Minster, a troubled young choir-boy drowns himself. Soon after, the Minster’s choirmaster – a belligerent man with a vicious reputation – is found murdered, in a discovery tainted as much by relief as it is by suspicion. The gaze of the magistrates falls on four local men, whose decisions will reverberate through the community for thirty ears to come.
So begin fourteen episodes, each one a story in its own right. A young gentleman and his groom/lover run off to join the army; a sleepwalking cordwainer wakes on his wife’s grave; a merchant meets his future spouse while she is evading a past lover; desperate farmhands emigrate. Then there’s the composer with writer’s block, the doubting priest, the smuggler with an inspector at his heels, six-year-old John who is obsessed with Lord Nelson and plagued by his sisters, a troupe of actors down from London, and old Art Harnham, whose difficult life has made him hard to amuse.
Meanwhile, justice waits, and when it strikes, great sacrifice proves too much and too little for redemption. As multiple strands and viewpoints twist into a searing finale, the mystery is solved and great change comes at great cost...
